We’re excited to share news of a groundbreaking new resource in the field of addiction science:
Introduction to Addiction Psychiatry (1st Edition), published by Cambridge University Press and co-authored by Dr. R. Andrew Chambers, and Dr. Kevin Masterson. Dr. Chambers received a CAN 2025 Innovation Award and will start his research this summer. A summary will appear soon on the CAN website.
This field-defining textbook is designed to engage a wide range of students and professionals—advanced undergraduates, graduate students, medical trainees, nurses, therapists, clinical and basic scientists, as well as those working in legal, policy, and community treatment settings.
What makes this book stand out?
It’s accessible, affordable, and highly conceptual, packed with original, visually engaging figures to bring key ideas to life. The goal is not just to educate—but to inspire. The authors aim to spark a movement to rebuild treatment systems and grow the addiction psychiatry workforce by grounding it in rigorous science and interdisciplinary collaboration.
“We want people to get pulled in—to understand addiction as a brain disease, to break down stigma, bust persistent myths, and help unify the field around both its clinical and neuroscientific foundations,” says Dr. Chambers, Professor of Psychiatry and Outgoing Director of the IU Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine.
Whether you’re in academia, clinical practice, policy, or advocacy, Introduction to Addiction Psychiatry offers a science-based, stigma-shattering perspective that CAN strongly supports. The book is not only an educational tool—it’s a call to action.
